Australian Canoeing Sea Skills Award Week at Jervis Bay Kayak Co

A fantastic week of weather and swell treated this weeks group of Sea Skills students to perfect conditions for learning, practicing and some really fun paddling conditions.

CJ, Lewis and Anthony enjoying the early sunny morning conditions

With mild conditions progressing to strong westerly and southerly changes and 1m - 1.5m swell conditions we started with the basics and worked our way through the program to rolling, surf control, trip planning and an overnight expedition to put it all together.

Camp life sheltered behind the dunes

We finished the week with the a bit of a windy and rainy Assessment day along the coast and around Bowen Island with all the students demonstrating great skill progression enjoying the bumpy conditions.

JBK Solomon Islands Trip 2014 - We're Back.

Ross Boardman - Wednesday, May 14, 2014
JBK Instructor Matt Goodwin has returned home from an epic 10 days in one of the last great unspoilt kayaking areas of the world, the Marovo Lagoon of the Solomon Islands. This is JBKs 4th Annual Expedition to this beautiful region.

The Warriors of the Tribal War Canoe of Kajoro, greeted us with a smile thankfully

The Marovo Lagoon is the world's biggest saltwater lagoon and provides a spectacular opportunity for sea kayaking in a pristine environment amongst the backdrop of amazing cultural interactions with local Solomonese villagers.

A wonderful group of keen paddlers from all over Australia, the crew spent time camping on deserted tropical islands, snorkelling over coral reefs and WW2 relics and being welcomed with open arms by locals into their own homes and gardens.

The children of Eleluka Village presenting us with the local frogs

Highlights of the trip included being honoured to paddle a traditional Solomonese War Canoe, being invited to share a meal with locals in the villages of Eleluka, Kajoro and Cheke, paddling through the Australian Army created WW2 era Bapata Passages of New Georgia Island and snorkeling some of the most untouched coral reefs left in the world.

Simply Paradise - Morovo Lagoon and the Island of New Georgia in the Distance
All of the group agreed that traveling to the Solomon Islands is something of a life changing experience, and were humbled to be accepted by the local people so readily when paddling through what amounts to be their own backyard. The Marovo Lagoon is certainly an experience not be missed.

JBK as always wish to thank all the paddlers; Eric, Marianne, Di, Angela, Tim, Petra and Mary. We also thank our Kayak Solomons Guide Aeram for an unforgettable week and hope the connection we have forged will be ongoing for a long time to come.

Best Regards - JBK Team

Mega Surf Kayak Camp in Tasmania last week.

Ross Boardman - Sunday, April 13, 2014
Our Mega Surf Camp hit the road on the 6th/7th April as we were invited by Canoe Tasmania to conduct the weekend program at Carlton Beach near Hobart Tasmania for some very keen Surf Kayakers.

With a mix of skills in the group we started with some on beach instruction on equipment and fit out, Tricks to paddling out and picking your take off spot and then we worked on body movement and use of the paddle for trim, speed, control and linking turns.

We hit the waves and as the group worked through their drills we photographed and assessed where some extra tweaks were need to push their improvement.

Tassie turned on brilliant weather and waves for the event and the group really gelled together to create a fun atmosphere in the water.
