Would you like to learn to be a self sufficient paddler on the Ocean? Would you like your kayaking skills to be recognized by Australian Canoeing and the Australian TAFE and V.E.T (Vocational Education and Training ) scheme and be able to take this qualification anywhere? …. 

            Then why not undertake our Australian Canoeing Sea Skills Award Program. This program is designed to give you the training you need to become a Proficient Sea Kayaker and will give you the qualification necessary to go on to become a Sea Instructor or Sea Guide. The Award covers certain units of the TAFE Outdoor Recreation Certificate IV qualification which you can apply for and which will be nationally recognized. The AC Sea Skills Award is also great for anyone wishing to include Sea Kayaking in their travels whether it be at home or overseas, it will be a great way to prepare and really get the most out of your paddling trip. 

Candidates will demonstrate in their final Sea Skills Assessment, the ability to plan and conduct personal kayaking activities in sea kayaks at sea defined as outside of estuaries, embayment or other sheltering reefs or islands in moderate conditions defined as:

Conditions below Fresh (17 knots) as defined by the Beaufort Scale and used by the Bureau of Meteorology
Assessed in minimum winds of 11 knots (moderate conditions)
Areas of exposed coastline that is simple, not involving overfalls, tidal races, difficult landings or open crossings may be included
Distances of up to 4 nautical miles from the nearest shore
Breaking (overtopping) waves (sea) up to 1 m
Surf to 1 m.

The holder of an AC Sea Skills Award will gain the skill to be able to demonstrate (at sea in moderate to fresh conditions):

Preparation of craft and equipment
Launch and land in surf to 1 metre
Paddle the craft efficiently in moderate (to 16kn) conditions at sea:
forwards, backwards, sideways and turning
use correct forward, reverse, draw and sweep strokes
use safe, effective support strokes, using both blade faces, in surf to 1m
Competently participate in rescues as rescuee and rescuer
Competently accept a tow
Capsize and roll in surf to 1 metre
Secure craft for transport, secure equipment to craft.

The Sea Skills Award Candidate will gain the Knowledge to be able to :

Demonstrate the ability to plan and navigate an overnight sea trip
Understand the advantages and limitations of sea kayaks
Plan and navigate an overnight sea kayak coastal passage
Store, operate and maintain appropriate communication equipment
Select appropriate equipment and clothing with consideration of sun sense and hypothermia
Interpret weather for a marine environment.
Maintain effective communication with a group.
Candidates wishing to undertake Assessment of The Australian Canoeing Sea Skills Award must also produce a Verified Log Book of experience showing over the previous two years of at least :

Two different overnight coastal sea kayak trips
Six coastal trips of a minimum of three hours duration over a period of at least two years.
Australian recognized Senior First Aid certificate

Please Note : This program progresses daily to build the basis of the Australian Sea Skills Award. All components must be attended to ensure completeness of Units of competency required. .

UNITS OF COMPETENCY :

SRO KYS 002A  Demonstrate simple sea kayaking skills to a high standard
SRO KYS 003A  Apply sea kayaking skills in moderate conditions
SRO OPS 004B Plan and navigate a sea kayaking inshore passage
SRO CNE 003A Perform deep water rescues
SRO NAV 002B Navigate in difficult or trackless areas

To be eligible for this AWARD participants must:

Be over 15 years of age
Able to swim 50 metres fully clothed for paddling, in the water to be used for the program
Able to demonstrate a safe, comfortable wet exit, fully equipped for paddling
